Understand the counts
Words are counted as non-empty groups separated by whitespace. That is useful for everyday drafts, but a publisher or school may count hyphenated words, symbols, or footnotes differently. Characters are shown both including and excluding whitespace.
Sentences and paragraphs use simple text rules, so abbreviations and unusual formatting can affect the numbers. Treat the result as a writing aid and check the counting rules of a submission portal when a limit is strict.
Reading time and frequent words
Reading time uses 200 words per minute and speaking time uses 130 words per minute, rounded up to whole minutes. A 400-word draft therefore shows about two minutes of reading time and four minutes of speaking time; individual pace varies.
The frequent-word list ignores words of three characters or fewer. Its percentage is the displayed word count divided by the total word count, not a search-ranking score. Use it to spot repetition, not to chase a target keyword density.
Private drafting
The text is analyzed as you type in your browser; the tool does not upload the draft. Copy your work before closing the tab, because the editor is not a document backup service.
